Post-Pregnancy Hair Loss.

We all know that during pregnancy our hair is in the best condition of its life, but what happens after we’ve given birth to our bundle of joy? For all women, losing hair is a devastating experience but when it comes just after one of the most important moments of your life it can be scary and incredibly stressful.

But there is no need to worry. Hair loss after pregnancy is very common among women. A woman’s hormones begin to return to how they were before pregnancy which causes a shock to the body and results in this temporary condition. The increased levels of oestrogen in the woman’s body during pregnancy have a direct effect on their hair, which is why it often appears so luscious.

But once a woman delivers a baby there is a dramatic drop in the levels of oestrogen in your body and this means that your hair follicles will enter the shedding phase. It can be very alarming for a woman to discover big clumps of hair in the plug hole and in their hairbrush but it is important to note that this is a temporary condition. Six months after childbirth your hair will start returning to normal and new growth will be evident.

In some cases the temporary hair loss will not right itself without medical intervention so it is important you seek advice from a doctor who may need to devise a treatment that gets your hormonal levels back to normal.

In the mean time, make sure you don’t put your hair in particular styles that may cause unnecessary stress on the hair. For example, wearing pigtails, cornrows, hair weaves and braids will only weaken the roots and ends. Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica and be gentle with your scalp and hair by avoiding using products that heat your hair.
